Residential Wallpaper Removal in Dallas-Fort Worth

State 28 Painting Company strips old wallpaper from homes across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, then repairs and smooths the walls so they are ready for paint or new paper.

Why the wallpaper never came off the easy way

Nearly everyone has tried to peel a corner and found out the paper has other plans. Some wallpaper lifts in clean sheets. Much of it tears into strips and leaves a backing layer glued to the wall, and under that sits a film of adhesive that gums up any roller. Pull too hard on a wall that was never primed, and the paper face of the drywall comes away with it.

Older houses add more layers. It is common to find a second or third wallpaper hung directly over the first, and each one has to come off. Humidity makes it worse. A bathroom or a kitchen with years of steam behind the paper can have seams that lifted, mildew spots and soft patches that only show once the paper is gone.

Wall movement matters here too. North Texas clay soil shifts through wet and dry seasons, and walls crack where the house moves. Wallpaper hides hairline cracks and patched corners for years. Taking it down is how you find out what is underneath, which is exactly why the job begins with an assessment of the wallpaper type and the condition of the wall.

How State 28 takes a wall back to bare

The sequence is plain and it is done in order. First we assess the wallpaper type and wall condition. Then every wallpaper layer comes off, with care taken not to gouge the wall. Leftover adhesive has to come off the surface too, because paint and primer will not bond to old paste. The wall is then prepared, and any damage the paper was hiding gets repaired.

A dedicated project manager is on the job site, so one person is accountable for the room, the schedule and the cleanup. The crew is lead-certified, which counts in older homes: if the paint beneath your wallpaper might be lead-based, ask us about Lead-Based Paint Testing before anything is scraped or sanded. Removed wallpaper is cleaned up and disposed of when the room is done.

The last step is the one most people forget: leaving a smooth finish for painting. A repaired wall is primed so that paint dries evenly, without a patch showing through as a dull flat spot. That is the point where our painters take over, and where the color consultant can help you choose what goes on next. Wallpaper removal typically takes one to three days per room, depending on the room size and the type of wallpaper.

After the paper is gone

Professional removal should not damage your walls, and any minor imperfections can be repaired before painting. If it turns out the damage is bigger than cosmetic, Drywall Repair handles cracks, holes and water marks and textures them to match. Once the wall is sound, Interior House Painting covers walls, ceilings and trim, with crisp cut lines at every corner.

Should you paint over wallpaper instead of removing it? It is possible, but we generally advise against it. Seams telegraph through the paint, the paper can bubble as moisture hits it, and the next owner or the next repaint inherits the problem. Removal gives the best long-term result and a wall you can recolor for years.

You can also use the freshly bare wall to try something new. A Feature Wall Painting job is a natural next step, and Faux and Decorative Painting works well on a smooth, repaired surface. We are licensed, bonded and insured, our work carries three-year labor and materials warranties, and quotes are free and same day. Call (214) 771-9145 from Grapevine or anywhere in the Metroplex.
